In early 2011 for the first time, I came across a Youtube video of a 3D Printer in action. This was the first time I had heard of 3D Printing and initially, I thought it a hoax, fictitious, a product of some inventive Hollywood video producer, so I hunted for more examples and low and behold there were countless examples, amazing! When I had convinced myself of the authenticity of the technology I started in earnest to research and learn as much as I could. One very informative exercise that I engaged in was to ask people that I met in my day to day activities about their knowledge of 3D Printing. Back in early 2011, 19 people out of 20 that I asked had never heard of 3D Printing. I remember clearly back then that the news of the day was the acquisition of MakerBot by Stratasys for $401 Million dollars and 3D Systems under Avi Reichental was at the beginning of a torrid acquisition campaign that resulted in seeing him ultimately replaced.
Consumer 3D Printing was driving the 3D Printing hype machine and the promise of a 3D Printer in every home by the year 2025 was the mantra.
In September of 2011 the now 'go to' site for 3D Printing reporting, 3ders.org was created and 3D Printing was hard linked to Rapid Prototyping.
What is 3D Printing? and What is a 3D Printer? were questions asked and answered and the "3D Printing Service Bureau" model was at inception.
First and foremost, however, was the world changing and all-encompassing feeling of being at the beginning of an enormous movement with disruptive potential beyond comprehension and description!
3D Printed Organs, 3D Printed Cars, 3D Printed Homes.... and just entering the conversation at the time Metal 3D Printing. Metal 3D Printing, now the holy grail of the Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing technologies was unheard of but whispers hinted at. Today General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, BMW, Airbus, Google, and numerous of the largest corporations on the planet are moving quickly to take advantage of the enormous cost savings and the potential for innovation offered with the Metal 3D Printer.
